Working Alone

November 23, 2019

We’ve owned the farm almost 8 weeks, now.  John has been working alone this last week as Katie was on a business trip, and she won’t be home for 10 more days!

The rough plumbing in the bathroom and kitchen are finished and all the sheetrock is up.  We installed radiant heat and ceramic tile on the bathroom floor. We are putting large tiles on 2 of the bathroom walls. That’s about half done. It is starting to be annoying to run to the house to use the restroom or take a shower or wash dishes. Did we mention that it is VERY COLD in the morning, especially after you’ve showered? It is getting old. BUT, and we finally got that huge hole in the ceiling patched!

And then we had to deal with the propane heater.  We bought a heater that is meant to heat the entire apartment.  It worked for a few days, and then it didn’t.  Our gas company technician came out and inspected our set up.  He could not figure out why it didn’t work.  He called the maker of the heater and after 45 minutes with technical support, he was still baffled and determined we probably had a defective unit.  So back to the store we went to return it and get another one.

We also had trouble with the electrical work.  We’re not sure who wired the garage and apartment, but they did not wire it correctly.  Some things were double wired and other things were wired to switches that didn’t work.

A huge lesson we learned this last month is that we are not good at taping and muding sheetrock.  We can see EVERY SINGLE SEAM!  When we get to the house, we will certainly hire out that job.

Our 2 youngest sons, 18 & 25 stopped in for a visit during their fall break (they are both in school). Thankfully, they were able to help with a few projects.  They are heading to Alabama next Wednesday to join Katie for Thanksgiving at her parents and to attend a family wedding.  Hopefully they will be able to get some hunting in before they leave.  We hunt to fill our freezer and depend on a successful hunt every year.  We just cannot skip this year.
