Starting on the House

February 13, 2020

We finally started on the main house. We’ve learned that it had been added on to at least 2 times, maybe 3. Some walls are sheetrock and others are lath and plaster. There is exterior siding on interior walls! We’ve not had too many “scary” surprises, but it is a MESSY job. Katie got to get new tools because we each needed a pry bar and hammer, and they all match (her phone and car are red, too)!

The wood floors in the new master bedroom are in excellent condition. We will have to install laminate everywhere else.

We finally got a plug installed to run our dryer – 4 months without a dryer was enough!

We had a contractor out to give us advice on removing interior walls and installing headers. I can’t wait to start on that and open the house up! We will continue gutting the house and then turn our attention to demolding the crawl space and putting in a vapor barrier.

In other news, we moved 5 of our bee hives to the farm. They had been at a friend’s property about 25 minutes away. It will be nice to not have to travel so far to tend to the bees. And it was a good thing we moved them when we did. It snowed the next day!

We also had apple experts from our local Extension Office visit our farm to give us advice on starting our orchard. The first 30 trees will arrive in late March/early April. If you happen to have a backhoe and want to dig a few drainage ditches, let us know.
