Fiesta

June 20, 2021

One early Saturday morning, Joshua and I were heading out to run some errands.  Before we got into the car, we heard a noise coming from one of our storage buildings. To our surprise, a kitten was curled up in the tall grass in front of the building.  Don’t crucify me, but we are not exactly cat people. I told Joshua to leave it alone, that its mother was probably close by (it was tiny).

When we returned from our errands about 6 hours later, the kitten was still there, and meowing like crazy. It was obvious its mother was not around and we just couldn’t leave it there. Joshua picked up the kitten and looked it over. It was not afraid of us, was not mangy, did not have fleas, and was not scrawny. We determined that someone dropped it off (we live right off a busy street).

We brought the kitten into the barn, gave it water and some chicken feed (that’s all we had at the time). It ignored the feed, but did drink the water. The next day, we bought real kitten food and she loved it.

I guess we are becoming cat people, because later that afternoon, the kitten was in our apartment and we figured out she was female. She was just too little to leave out in the barn. We guessed she was about 5-6 weeks old.

Joshua decided that he would adopt her. He was texting his college friends asking what to name her. One of them asked if she was “feisty,” but mistyped and her phone sent “Fiesta.”  There was no more question, the kitten would be named Fiesta.

After two different visits to the vet, a litter box, scratching pads, and numerous toys, Fiesta has become part of the family.  We are training her to not bite. She does a good job of staying off the table and counters, but does sleep in our beds. And she is a great alarm clock – she’s wide awake and wants to play every morning around 6am!

Joshua is hoping to bring her back to college to stay in his apartment.
